Classes
The following 2 classes will be sailed in the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.
International 2.4mR - single handed keel boat, open to male and female
competitors.
Originating in Stockholm in 1983, the International 2.4mR class is a singlehanded boat
where the sailor sits low to the waterline in the boat's cockpit, which contains the
steering and sail trimming systems. These miniature keelboats are light, yet responsive,
and provide excellent fleet racing competition in a variety of wind conditions. The
2.4mR's are designed for a wide variety of physical abilities, which ensures that the
competitor's knowledge of sailing determines the outcome of the race irrespective of their
disability. The Sydney 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games will see the 2.4mR class compete as a
medal sport for the first time.

International 2.4 Metre Class
Sonar - 23ft keel boat sailed by 3 athletes, open to male and female
competitors.
The Sonar is a three person keel boat designed by Bruce Kirby in 1980. Carrying a slightly
heavier ballast and keel weight displacement, the stability of these boats is increased.
In addition an 11ft wide cockpit with angled seating makes the Sonar class an ideal
Paralympic boat. For the Paralympic competition crews generally consist of four members,
three of whom race at any one time with the other as an alternate reserve. Prior to
Paralympic competition, a crew's physical functional classification is assessed upon
stability, hand function, manoeuvrability, visibility and hearing. The crew is required to
collectively meet a required classification rating to be eligible to compete. The Sydney
2000 Paralympic Games will see the Sonar Class compete for the first time as a medal
sport.

Sailing Venue
The sailing shore base at Rushcutters Bay will be closed to spectators.
For race course areas, see map at NSW Waterways. The exclusion zones will come into force from 11am - 5pm and a speed limit of 6 knots applies to all vessels within 200m of the exclusion zone.
Spectator Opportunities
Pack up a picnic and head off to one of the headlands around the harbour to view the
sailing. Don't forget your boxing kangaroo flag and your binoculars. You may not see much
racing but you're sure to have a day to remember.
The best place to view the Paralympics will be Bradleys Head, Mosman - You can catch a bus and ferry from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo. It was a very popular spot during the Olympic Games.
On the southside of the Harbour the best places will be Duff Reserve, Wolseley Road, Point Piper which is a very small area or Nielsen Park on Steel Point. Some of the view from the top of Nielson Park is obscured by trees so you may have to move around to see the whole race but its a great place for a picnic. Buses 324 & 325 from Circular Quay go to both areas or walk along the foreshore from Rose Bay or Watson Bay to Nielson Park.
Charter boats will be operating outside the exclusion zones. See Boating OZ Charter index
