3. WINDSURFING ACROSS AUSTRALIA
James Francis and Lachie Paramor left Adelaide on July 2 on
two gigantic skateboards with windsurfer rigs. They planned to sail up the
Stuart highway to Darwin but no wind then 20 knot headwinds forced them to walk
and skate most of the time.
Lachie was forced to retire yesterday with a knee injury but James continued
on to Coober Pedy 550 kilometres from Adelaide. About 40km from Coober Pedy
a breeze sprung up from behind.
'It was really weird sailing down the highway doing about 30kmh at night,'
said James. 'I gybed into the main
street of Coober Pedy and then did another gybe into the servo.' Photos and

The Inner Circle Polar Challenge was run in a lovely little sou' westerly.
The concept – hit a given longtitude at any point, then turn and bolt for
home. Adjusting for the current and how the breeze may shift is the trick to
a good race. The Short Handed Sailing Association of Australia was pleased
to have 14 starters this year, and the competition was as fierce as ever!

The Great Barrier Reef, covers an area greater than Victoria or
Great Britain and is half the size of Texas. It runs from Gladstone to Cape York
off the Queensland coast. The reef is closest to the mainland at Cairns and is
35 nautical miles from the Whitsunday Islands, however some of the islands have
fringing reefs.
-
Not all charter boats are licensed to carry passengers to the Great Barrier
Reef. Some Whitsunday charter boats are limited to cruising around the islands
and their fringing reefs. The larger skipper yourself boats are allowed to the
reef with a cruise guide on board, but check with your charter company before
booking. Day trips on high speed multihull boats, dive boats, helicopters and
sea planes are available from the mainland and the islands daily, weather
permitting. Large floating pontoons on the reef offer visitor amenities and minimise damage
to the environment.
