April 17 - Slow Travel - Sell the house, buy the yacht and sail away... by Mari Rhydwen. Mari and her husband left Perth and did just that with no real plans to go anywhere in particular. They cruised to Asia and then crossed the Indian Ocean stopping at Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Chagos and the Seychelles before reaching Kenya and Tanzania.

Chagos is an 'uninhabited paradise full of fruit trees and fish, where people can live like castaways off the bounty of the sea'. 'It is perhaps the last place on earth where you can pretend to be free of society and of law and where the people who visit create their own conventions.'

And on Africa .... 'I don't think I had set off across the ocean in search of anything in particular; here I realised I had found it in that strange world of exiles-in-Africa.' PB $24.95

Oct 20 - The Navigators - The Great Race between Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin for the North-South Passage through Australia by Klaus Toft. In 1800 it was rumoured that a strait separated the east part of Australia from the west, running north - south. Bonaparte sent Baudin to Terres Australes on a much publisized scientific expedition but he also gave instructions to chart the straight with a view to claiming the western part for France. Joseph Banks urged the British Admiralty to mount a rival mission and Flinders was despatched in a leaky ship. This book is easy to read, takes a fresh look at Australian history and gives the reader an idea of what it must have been like to live on a ship at this time. Highly recommended by both Kathy & Tim from Boating OZ. PB $20.00
