The Manroland Tornado World Championship started with a bang, great wind conditions and a perfect three races for the 51 entries contesting the Manroland Tornado World Championship on Lübeck Bay in Travemünde, Germany.
Winds were at 15-17 knots and gusting 20 at the start, dying slightly at the top mark in the second race but it soon came back, giving the fleet a brilliant day of sailing. The day ended with the mixed German crew of Roland and Nahid Gaebler in the lead, followed by Greek Olympians Denis Paschalides and Kostas Trigonis, followed by the Aussies, Brett Burvill and Ryan Duffield.
However, the order changed on Day 2, with the Gaeblers still leading, the Greek crew had moved to second and Germany’s Olympic brothers, Helge and Sach Christian, had taken over third place.
In the first two races, the starts were reasonably clean, however, in the third race, a number of boats were OCS’d, but continued without realising. At the start of the second race, an incident involving an Italian team that parked just off the line, and a German, resulted in the Germans going up the back of the Italians and mounting their trampoline.
By the end of the third race, winds were much stronger, with a fantastic downwind ride enjoyed by all. There were a few swims and breakages, but everyone is working to get the boats fixed for Day 2, which they did and two more races were held.
Great to see so many teams out on the start line, including mixed crews with ladies at the helm.
The Tornado AGM was held last night with lots of sailors keen to get involved and help on the Committee and to do their bit to try to get the Tornado back into the Olympics.
