Almost 150 responses have been received from the boating community to a discussion paper on ways to improve safety on the Murray River.
Minister for Ports and Waterways, Paul McLeay said submissions are part of a review into safety on the Murray River, as well as Lake Hume and Lake Mulwala.
“The issue of boating safety on the Murray River struck a chord with the community. I would like to thank everyone who has provided us with feedback,” said Mr McLeay.
“We want everyone to be enjoying boating safely, so those submissions will be taken very seriously in the review.
Country Labor’s Tony Catanzariti said community meetings had been held with groups including councils, local police, boating clubs, fishing groups, tourism bodies, passive craft users, water sports clubs and commercial operators.
“Marine Safety Victoria has also been involved, because 80% of incidents are Victorian registered vessels,” Mr Catanzariti said.
“Since 1992 there have been 28 deaths and 115 serious injuries the area. Last summer alone, from December to February 13, there were 4 deaths and 7 serious incidents.”
NSW Maritime will be assessing all community feedback, and will develop new safety measures for implementation in the coming months.
Safety options presented in the discussion paper include:
• Introducing speed limits and zoning of areas of waterways - including a 40 knot speed limit, lower speed limits during peak boating periods, 'no slow towing’ zones, towing and personal watercraft only zones.
• Controls on towing activities such as ski tubes, and introducing a 'no added weight’ rule to control wake.
• Additional Boating Safety Officers and assistance from Maritime Safety Victoria in undertaking compliance; as well as increased regulation in relation to anti-social behaviour, lifejackets; and alcohol.
• New licensing and education measures for Victorian boaters.
• Improved safety measures to avoid vessel fires such as compulsory blowers and vents for inboard petrol engine boats.
Boating safety is the focus of the Marine Precinct run by NSW Maritime at this year’s Sydney International Boat Show from 29 July to 2 August 2010.
